Doreen is the author of the wonderful children’s book My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home and its sequel, My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home: The Mission. Both books tell the story of orphaned chimps and how they find a home at Camp Eden, a chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa. “My Sanctuary: A Place I Call Home captures the desperate need of orphaned chimpanzees and how they find love and a new life at Chimp Eden. The perfect gift for every child. I love this book.” says Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, Founder the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace.
But even the best books don’t sell themselves, and Doreen set out to not only publicize her work, but use it to educate children to the plight of the chimpanzees. Her school visits include book readings as well as a video presentation on the chimps, followed by question and answer sessions.
Through a teacher that she knew, Doreen was able to schedule her first couple of classroom appearances. They went so well that the school superintendent asked her to give her presentation to the elementary school principals in the district, many of whom then asked her to their schools. Word spread. Another meeting of media specialists led to more invitations. Schools are pre-ordering books for their teachers and libraries as well as distributing flyers so that parents can buy and have the books signed. One school is buying a book for each teacher – which by itself meant over 50 book sales!
Doreen’s advice to other authors: “Anyone who knows a teacher at a school can ask the teacher to get an appointment with the principal.” It’s that simple. She also suggests calling the school office or library and telling them about your book.
Doreen also joined SBPRA in attending the American Library Association expo last June in New Orleans and got in on the ground floor of our Authors and Libraries program, which has led to appearances at local libraries as well. For info on A+L, go to http://authorsandlibraries.com/?page_id=11
